This world of individual nations is not going to be controlled by any one power or group of powers. This world is not going to be committed to any one ideology. Please believe me when I say that the dream of world domination by one power, or of world conformity, is an impossible dream. We must then seek with new vigor, new initiative the path to a peace based on the effective control of armaments, on economic advancement and on the freedom of all peoples to be ruled by governments of their choice. Only thus can we exercise the full capacity God has given us to enrich the lives of the individual human beings who are our ultimate concern, our responsibility, and our strength.

--Dwight D. Eisenhower, speech to the United Nations, 1958

Not for the squick-sensitiveCollapse )

On another note: I'll be purchasing this soon, 'cause I have *got* to read it (perhaps on principle alone). At first when I heard about it, I was all like "Nuh-uh...that is a cheesy idea done more for the merchandising/selling-point aspect than anything else." But the more I thought about it, the more I had to get it and read it because--instead of being cheesy--the concept became quite humorous to me. If nothing else, I just wanna see how they set it up, and who gets it (hopefully Lydia is the first to go! She was stupid enough so it would hardly be surprising...)

I agree with Ent -- this has got to be the greatest complaint letter ever.

Cheeky!

I read an article this morning that says the inauguration's cost is up to $110 million dollars.

And the line for the rant begins here.Collapse )

If all the eight desserts listed below were sitting in front of you, which would you choose (you can only pick one). Pick your dessert and then look to see what psychiatrists think about you.

Now don't cheat. Go with the first dessert you choose.

Here are your choices:

1. Angel Food Cake
2. Brownies
3. Lemon Meringue Pie
4. Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Icing
5. Strawberry Short Cake
6. Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Icing
7. Ice Cream
8. Carrot Cake

You can't change your mind once you scroll down, so think carefully what your choice will be.

OK - Now that you've made your choice, this is what the researchers say about you...Collapse )

Every time I hear Beyonce's song "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", all I can think of is that I wish someone would move that cat so that its tail wasn't underneath the rocking chair and it could have some peace :)

(Not her voice....that sound effect they have going on behind her during the song. If you've heard it, you know what I mean.)

Poor kitty!

so....close.....
Just a little longer....at this time next week, I will have given two exams and have one left. Almost all of my grading will be finished.

I can't wait.

Did I mention how tired I am? :)

And through it all...I still love teaching.

I got to class this morning, and one of my students told me that one of the other students in our class was killed in a car accident this past weekend :(

I *just* saw her last week on Thursday, when her group gave a presentation....and now she's gone. She was a really sweet young woman....I'm sure I'm not the only one who will miss her.

It's times like these that make me want to clutch hold of everyone I hold dear as tightly as I can--because it's another reminder of how quickly things can change and people are gone.

Arrrgh! Facebook is trying to suck me in and add me to its stable of addicts!!!!!!!!

Must....fight.....need....to....get....work....done........

It's a good thing I'm not there under my real name, or I'd never get anything done--it would be WAAAYYY too tempting to socialize if people I know find me. This way at least I can control myself a little by being all subversive-like ;) This way I can parcel out a bit the wave of people going "Oh, you're on here too!!" that I wanna talk to.....

I had forgotten how much I like Voltaire! I'm listening to his albums now as I work; and all I wanna do is get up and go tango-ing around the office in a long ruffly dress split up the leg. You know...the Spanish ones.

Heh.

According to our system, Moses (yep, the 10 commandments fella) died in Palestine, TX.

Wow! I had no idea. However, I *am* greatly amused.

I wonder if I should index the Exodus as "Household moves"?

I have a sinus infection.

Owie!

No drinky-drinky for me this weekend. I just hope I have enough of my energy, etc. back to get to Faire on Saturday....that's the only thing I really want to accomplish this weekend.

The rest of it = bed.

P.S. Here's a good explanation of why Palin gives me hope.

So far, the only thing I disagree with her on is abortion. Granted, the same argument about "not enough experience" that has been made about Obama can be made about her. But in a lot of respects, she's had more than he has....and I give her huge props for standing up against the system in her own party rather than play the game as it is. She puts her money where her mouth is.

Game on.

After Fred Thompson went out with such a whimper, I thought I would never be excited about politics ever again (truly, it's been nothing but disappointments and frustration). I've actually been considering *not* voting this year, b/c I have such a dislike of both candidates that I can't figure who would be the worse of the two evils.

Until this happened.

Now I'm psyched. Granted, I also wish the ticket were reversed (and Palin was running for President), but you can't have everything. Besides, there's always 2012....and getting her into a major office now is an excellent way to start laying the groundwork.

One can hope, anyway.

Wouldn't it be ironic--after all this time of everyone *constantly* pissing on Republicans--if the Republican party is the one to put the first woman into a Presidential/VP position???

I'm feeling better. Because nothing puts life into perspective like reading the letter of a former slave recounting their experiences during the Civil War (grammar/spelling somewhat corrected by me for clarity):

When I was living with white people i was tied down hand and foot and they tied me to the post and whip me till I could not stand up and they tied my blouse over my head and whip me much as they want and they took my brother and sent him to Richmond to stay one year. And sent my aunt my sister my father away too and said if he did not go away they would kill him. They said they was going to put me in prison but the light has come. The rebels is put down and slavery is dead. God bless the union forever more. And they was putting poeple in tubs and they scared me to death and I hope slavery shall be no more. And they said that the Yankees had horns and said that the Yankees was goin to kill us and something told me not to believe them and something told me not to be afraid. And when they come here they would not let me come out to see them and when I was out in the street they was scared I would go away from them and they said I better stay with them for the Yankees would kill me.
